Pat Blair

Watercolors and Calligraphy

About Pat

For the major part of her career, Pat has been a calligrapher. She free-lanced for 10 years in New York, before moving to the DC area in 1996, where she worked for another 10 years, developing a clientele. During that time, she joined the Washington Calligraphers Guild, serving as president for two years. Pat began teaching workshops, and has been on the faculty of over 12 International Conferences, as well as being the Director of the Conference when it was held in this area. Pat has also been on the faculty of the Loudoun Academy of the Arts in Leesburg. The highlight of her career was being asked to be the Director of the Calligraphy Office at The White House in Washington, DC, where she worked for 12 years. Along with her calligraphy, Pat has been an avid watercolor artist, and has been combining her painting with calligraphy for many years. Pat’s paintings have been in gallery shows, faculty exhibits, and shown as part of her classes taught online and in person. Since retiring from the White House, Pat has had the time to really explore this favorite medium and has been teaching Zoom classes in watercolor for four years. Pat has learned a lot from her 35 years as a calligraphic and watercolor artist, and would enjoy being part of a community of artists such as Artists’ Undertaking Gallery. She is excited to further encourage others and support the community.

Artist Statement

As light as breath, with each brush stroke, I want my artwork to be uncluttered and embrace simplicity. I want the glow of the paper to show through the translucent pigments as I strive to find the essence of my subject. I have always been drawn to minimalist expression, spontaneous and honest brushwork that gives energy to the painting while the colors blend together delicately. By adding text in various ways, I can include both my passion for calligraphy and love of words, letting them speak together.
